Today is Good Friday. No-one seems to know for sure why it is called Good. Good is a very old word in English; it comes originally from Old German. The OED says the root may have been related to a verb meaning 'to unite' or 'bring together' (gather and together would also have this root).
It could also perhaps be because of the similarity between the words good and God. After all, goodbye is a contraction of God be with you (ye originally). Good Friday was called Long Friday by the Anglo-Saxons.
