Skank may have just reached the UK, but it's been used in the US at least since the 60's as a derogatory word for a woman, in particular, an unattractive young woman,but not in the sense of slut. It's used to describe a date whose appearance and personality disappointed you. Thanks for the link to the David Crystal article.

Thanks, Marc. I didn't know 'skank' but I had heard 'skanky' here before. Someone who hadn't washed her hair for several days might describe it as 'skanky', for instance.
