He goes on to say that it is the knowledge and use of English that is propelling India to economic superpower status. However, the other side to this coin is that English may kill off other languages spoken in India, of which there are hundreds. Tully notes that history teaches us that the threat to Indian languages has the potential to provoke a violent backlash.

I don't think English has the power to kill off the other Indian dialects without causing a massive ruckus, as you said. Millenia of Indian history and culture would need to be overwritten for that to happen.
