I don't know whether to laugh or cry. This post (and the piece behind it) depicts an all-too-common problem. My fear is that it will become the norm and will be routinely accepted.

My personal favourite is "alot" as in "many". That is a very common sloppy error over here.

Thanks, John. I haven't noticed 'alot' as one word a lot, but I remember students occasionally writing 'allot', and, of course, the computer spell-checker didn't correct it, since it is an English word.
