Vocal fry is the lowest vocal register. It’s sometimes called creaky voice, and sounds like a guttural growl. In a recent article in The Guardian, Naomi Wolf bemoans the fact that vocal fry has become fashionable among young women, influenced by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears and Katy Perry. The young women who use vocal fry also tend to use other speech mannerisms, such as uptalk, or using a rising or questioning intonation when making statements, plus breathiness and run-ons, which are clauses joined together without punctuation, conjunctions or other breaks.
Many people, including Wolf, thinks that vocal fry and these other mannerisms are holding young women back in their careers, since the mannerisms are annoying to more senior executives, and make the young women sound insecure and lacking in confidence.
